Natural Gas Pipeline Across NJ Pinelands is Defeated

Citizens opposed to fracking in or around Allegheny County Parks may be interested in this news. By a 4-4 vote on Jan. 10 the New Jersey Pinelands Commission defeated a proposal to build a 22-mile natural gas pipeline across the fragile Pinelands National Reserve, an area known to Pittsburghers travelling to the New Jersey shore. A spokesman for the Sierra Club’s New Jersey Chapter said: “Today the commissioners said the Pinelands are not for sale.” The South Jersey Gas utility will have to find another route for the pipeline to supply gas to the currently coal-fired BL England power plant in Cape May County. Also of interest is the move by Gov. Christie to influence the vote by the independent Pineland commissioners.
