Chatham Univ. Ranks High Among Green Colleges

If the future leadership of Western Pennsylvania is to be more sensitive to environmental issues, that shift can begin in our colleges, in the schools of business, engineering, law, medicine, etc. How in-grained a respect for a sustainable future is throughout a college community is therefore very important. The Sierra magazine’s Seventh Annual ranking of Cool Schools attempts to measure that quality of colleges. In Pennsylvania Dickinson College in Carlisle is not only the most environmentally-conscious college in our state, it is judged to be the second in the nation. Topping the Top Ten is UC Santa Barbara, with UC Irvine in third place. In Western Pennsylvania Chatham U. has moved from 61st last year to 24th this year. In a very competitive field this is testimony to how green Chatham has become in the last few years. Following Chatham is Penn State at 51st, Carnegie Mellon at 61st, and Slippery Rock at 92nd. No other local colleges chose to take part in the survey. No Pitt! No Duquesne!
