In an OpEd Mary Anne Hitt, the Director of the Sierra Club’s ‘Beyond Coal Campaign’ discusses the implications of Obama’s Climate Action Plan for coal and clean energy. As Hitt points out, plans for 179 new coal-fired plans have already been stopped, and 147 of the 520 existing plants have been retired. The task now is for the EPa to draw up strong CO2 draft regulations, present them for public comment, and begin enforcing the final regulations June 2014.
In a recent conference call Hitt suggested that the Climate Action Plan is likely to accelerate the utility companies’ shift away from coal to renewable energy. Support for renewables in the Climate Action Plan will help advance this shift. What is lacking from the Climate Action Plan is the failure to address U.S. coal exports.
