Mapping ANF Natural Springs Outing, March 3

The Allegheny Defense Project is organizing an outing to map natural springs in the Allegheny National Forest. This will be the first effort to visit several natural spring sites and develop an inventory of springs for subsequent water quality testing. The outing may also visit areas of proposed or existing shale gas drilling sites so bring your cameras. We will meet at the Bucktail Hotel in Marienville, PA at 11:30 am. 6-hr Land Navigation challenge using topographic map and compass to locate 50 checkpoints in 4000 acres

The Raccoongaine

Sunday, March 25, 2012 – 10 AM

Raccoon Creek State Park (30 miles West of Pittsburgh)

3-hr and 6-hr foot race mini-rogaine (orienteering – scavenger hunt)

In a rogaine-style format, individuals or teams have a fixed time (3 or 6 hours in this event) to visit as many checkpoints as possible; walking, running and resting as they see fit. The checkpoints are spread over a large area, and are pre-marked on a map issued shortly before the start of the event. Point values for visiting each control vary (and are specified in advance) depending on such factors as distance from the start/finish area, elevation, navigational complexity. (more…)
