Friends of Allegheny Wilderness and the Scandia Wilderness Committee invite you to join us on an overnight winter backpacking trip into the proposed Scandia National Recreation Area, planned for the weekend of February 11th and 12th. This outing will give hikers a fine sense of wild, remote character of this eminently qualified prospective national recreation area on the west shore of Allegheny Reservoir.

The hike will begin Saturday morning from the north side of the proposed area along the Roper Hollow Road, and we will hike south into the Hodge Run drainage from there. Participants should be prepared for off-trail hiking, and consider that there is possibility for deep snow at this time of the year. Saturday evening we will stop along the way to make camp before dark, and we will hike out Sunday morning.

Hikers should bring all of their own food & camping equipment, and come fully prepared for whatever weather conditions we may encounter.

For more information and reservations contact Kirk Johnson at kjohnson at pawild dot org.

Enjoy an XC ski trip on Laurel Mountain just south of US 30.
A major problem with any XC trip is that different skill levels tend to ski at different speeds. This trip is aimed at people with prior experience but who still consider themselves as beginners.
If you prefer to form carpools at the Gateway Middle School in Monroeville, meet there at 9 AM (Departure at 9:15 AM)  If you prefer to meet the group at the trailhead, drive east on US30 through Laughlintown to the top of Laurel Ridge and turn right (south) onto Laurel Summit Road. Drive about 2 miles.  After you pass the entrance to the downhill ski area on your right, drive a few hundred yards further to the warming hut on your left.  A large parking area is on your right.
