Environmentalist, Ecofeminist Vananda Shiva to Speak at Thomas Merton Dinner, Nov. 3

Physicist, environmental activist, and ecofeminist Dr. Vandana Shiva, named one of the seven most-influential women in the world by Forbes magazine in 2010, will be the keynote speaker and annual award recipient at the Thomas Merton Center dinner scheduled for Thursday, November 3, at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel in Pittsburgh. 

Much of Dr. Shiva’s environmentalist energies have been focused on biotechnology and the patenting of life-forms.  A frequent target of her criticism has been the multi-national corporation Monsanto which specializes in producing pesticide-resistant seeds, and she has been quoted as saying “instead of rewarding them [Monsanto] with a patent, they should be punished for polluting our food chain.”

Important ALCOSAN Town Hall Meetings

Cost impacts will be outlined as the program’s price tag will be over $2 BILLION. By participating in a meeting, you can learn what is being considered in and around your community to address public health and the environment.

Health Effects of Shale Gas Extraction Conference

The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) will host the second annual Health Effects of Shale Gas Extraction Conference

Marcellus Protest 2011 Rally, State College

“Power to the People, Not the Corporations”

The rally is a two-part event. The first rally will be held on the steps of Old Main from noon until 1:00pm. This rally will celebrate the anticipated passing of a voter referendum on November 8th in State College that will affirm that community’s environmental rights and bans any future natural gas drilling in State College.

The second rally, will be held from 1:30 – 3:30 pm at the Penn State Conference Center, about 3 miles away from Old Main on the main campus. The Penn State Conference center will at the same time be hosting the Marcellus Summit 2011 sponsored by Range Resources and Chesapeake Energy, among others.

Invited speakers include Pittsburgh City Councilman Doug Shields, Ben Price of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, and Josh Fox, director of the Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning movie Gasland.

Sponsors include Elk County C.A.R.E.S., Marcellus Protest, Sierra Club Moshannon Group, and Sustainability Now Radio.
