Public Hearing: UPMC’s Tax-Exemption and Community Dec. 5

Allegheny County Council has unanimously agreed to hold a public hearing on the role of UPMC in the communities that it serves, including its non-profit status and tax-exempt properties.

According to the Post-Gazette: Barney Oursler, the executive director of Pittsburgh United, estimated that UPMC avoids paying more than $200 million in annual property taxes as a result of its nonprofit status. He urged county council to take a hard look at how what he called “a $10 billion global enterprise” carried out its charitable responsibilities.
