Enjoy, Explore, and Protect the Planet Sierra Club Allegheny Group, Pennsylvania Chapter

Upcoming Outings

You will notice that most Allegheny Group outings are joint outings with Meetup. We benefit from their huge membership and Meetup benefits from our leaders. Meetup is a worldwide organization with 7.2 million members in 79,000 local groups. Over a dozen Meetup groups are in the Pittsburgh area. Some examples include Hiking, Kayaking, Backpacking, Biking, Urban (Pittsburgh) walkers, and Vegans. The Pittsburgh Hiking Meetup Group is the group that the Allegheny Group primarily joins with, and it has over 1860 members and is growing by about 500 per year. Some of our leaders and members are also involved with the Kayaking Meetup group.

Membership in Meetup is free. When you first go to their website you will be asked what geographical area you live in and what your main interests are. Then you get a list of possible Meetup groups that you may find interesting. If you express an interest in hiking, you will then see a list of the numerous hikes and XC ski trips offered over the next few months by the Pittsburgh Hiking Meetup Group. You take it from there, hope you join us!

All participants on Sierra Club outings must sign a standard liability waiver form at the trailhead. You can read the waiver before being asked to sign the form at the trailhead at the national Sierra Club site, or contact the Outings Department at 415-977-5528 for a hard copy.

Allegheny Group's Compliance Number is CST 2087766-40.

Scouting a Threatened Area of Forbes State Forest, May 12

May 12, 2013
10:00 amto6:00 pm

The PA Division of Forestry has given 130 acres of state forest in Westmoreland County to a limestone mining company. Adjacent lands are managed as private nature preserve for its high-quality forest habitat, and the area is riddled with caves that bats rely on for winter hibernation. We will hike in and assess the condition of the area, at times probably off-trail. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants for protection from ticks and brambles. Bring water and a snack.

We will meet to carpool/caravan 10:00 AM Sunday, May 12 at the parking lot of the Sierra Club office, 425 N Craig Street 15213.
